Conservatives and Liberals are more alike than you think

Currently, it seems that Conservatives and Liberals are like polar opposites. For instance, pro-life vs pro-choice or fossil fuels vs solar or deportation vs immigration. It seems like the whole population of the U.S is divided in half and can never come to agreement...

However, just from an intuitive viewpoint it would seem that they are more alike than different. For instance, I think that humans, in general are the same. They generally share similar interests, hobbies, believe in respect, honesty and respond to incentives like money and fear. So how is it possible that when it comes to politics, things become so polar and opposite? It isn't. Thus, I think that Conservatives and Liberals are more alike than you think.

Study A):

The University of Southern California ran a study.
  1. They wanted to see if people greatly exaggerated the difference between conservatives and liberals, so they set out to prove it.
  2. They pulled people who said that they were moderates, liberals, and conservatives.
  3. If they were a liberal, they would imagine/pretend that they were a conservative and answer the questions. If they were a conservative, they would imagine/pretend that they were a liberal and answer the questions. This would effectively test if they exaggerated or had stereotypes of the other party.
  4. Then, the people had to respond to a survey. The survey had moral questions. Like republicans are viewed as supporting loyalty while liberals support compassion... on a scale of 1-10 ?
  5. Then, they had another survey of the actual beliefs of liberals and conservatives. In other words, Liberals answered the questions as liberals and conservatives answered the questions as conservatives.
  6. They compared the results between step 3 and step 5.
They found that when they "pretended or imagined" they were a liberal or conservative, their perspective was skewed and exaggerated. For instance, the people who imagined to be a liberal might rate it as 10 while an actual liberal might rate it as 5. However, moderates pretending tended to have the least exaggeration. This basically proves that Conservatives and Liberals are more alike than you think.

About Me

Hi,

I am Nick G. The author of this blog. I was born in 2002. Here is a list of favorites. My rational is explained in depth in these blog posts.

Energy Source: Nuclear Fission/Fusion
Government: Direct Democracy
Politician: Anyone who is a scientist or engineer.
Top 5 issues on earth1 Economy, 2 Environment, 3 Defense, 4 Indigenous Tribes, 5 Overpopulation.
Economic Structure: 80% Capitalism + 20% Regulation
Animal: Turtle

Q/A: These are addressed in blog posts. Use the search bar to find the exact article.

Q/A: How should government be run ?

1000 People should be randomly selected, brought to the Capitol, and listen to a debate between scientists, politicians, etc. Then, they vote on the issue and done.

Q/A: Why is Nuclear your favorite and not Solar or Wind ?

1 kg of Uranium can generate 24 million kWh. 1 kg of coal can generate 12 kWh. Current solar panels are around 10% efficient. Enough said.

Q/A: What is your view on Overpopulation ?

Overpopulation is like taboo in politics. They avoid it, even the more environmental minded politicians. I think that we need a 2 child policy.

Q/A: What is your view on Defense ?

We should only defend ourselves and not get involved in other people's conflicts. The Iraq war costed us $ 2 trillion. Enough said.

Q/A: What should we do about our National Debt ?

Cap it and pay it back slowly over 20 years.

Q/A: What is you view on indigenous tribes ?

They need to be protected from Western Influence. They have valuable medicinal knowledge and culture. They also have a right to continue their traditions and have been around longer than "civilized people".

Hi, folks. I just got back from my vacation in China. This is not a vacation blog, thus I probably won't be informing you on my whereabouts unless I get pretty bored in terms of politics. I don't post as much content in the summer but I will keep you updated.

The shirt is actually very similar to the one that I purchased at a Chinese market on my vacation.  It looks almost identical, it has a green background and the OBA Mao and Chinese writing is on the bottom. I could post the exact picture but this one off google images is close enough.

It looks pretty cool on me and if you want one, you can get this one off amazon. I payed 20 CNY which is about $3 for it. In contrast it is probably $30 on amazon.

REMEMBER TO KEEP CHECKING OUT MY BLOG

By the way, I just turned 14 on July 3rd. Which means that my content style will change again. For instance, 2 years ago when this blog was created, I had a very different approach when writing my posts....
